There is a high probability that you do know someone with Diabetes, because 10% of Indian adults are diabetic! India is considered the world capital of diabetes and has over 72 million cases of diabetes recorded until 2017. It has, indeed, become an epidemic!

Diabetes 

Diabetes is a disorder and not a disease. High sugar level in blood means that one is diabetic. It can be due to poor lifestyle choices (diabetes type 2) or simply because of the malfunctioning of the pancreas (diabetes type 1)

Is it Preventable?

Diabetes Type 1 is not preventable. The good news is that Diabetes Type 2 is preventable (in certain cases).

If diagnosed well in time and, diabetes type 2 can be prevented with simple and intelligent lifestyle choices.

  • Avoid unhealthy food

Calm your urge to have junk and fast food. Go for vegetables, fruits and high-fiber food.

  • Get blood sugar checked

You should get your blood sugar tested annually after the age of 35.

  • Watch your lifestyle & stress

       Avoid stress and find a balance between work & rest to avoid this disease.

  • Exercise regularly

     Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. Working out can help you manage weight, reduce blood sugar levels, control blood pressure and cholesterol.

  • Reduce Salt Intake, and quit smoking and alcohol

Manage Diabetes, Manage Life 

Accepting diabetes and finding ways to manage it is very important to lead life normally.

  • Get A1C test done

The first step you can take towards diabetes management is to opt for an A1C test. This checkup lets you know your average blood sugar level in the past 3 months.

  • Take medicines regularly

Take your medications as prescribed by the doctor whether it is pills or injectable medicines such as insulin to manage diabetes well.

  • Know what you eat

To counter diabetes, have food that is low in calories, fats, sugar and salt. Eat more fiber rich food like whole grain cereals, breads, rice and pasta. Go for water instead of juice and soda.

  • Control blood pressure & cholesterol

      Managing blood pressure and cholesterol is crucial if you have diabetes. So, get your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked up regularly.

  • Other important steps you need to take to manage diabetes well is to exercise daily and maintain a safe distance from smoking and alcohol. 

Diabetes is not curable. But it is preventable (type 2) and manageable. 

It can be daunting, but don’t let it dent your life! Proper Medication, an active lifestyle and healthy eating habits can help anyone with diabetes live long and live well!
