WHAT IS ENDOCARDITIS

Endocarditis is an infection of the heart valves or the inner lining of the heart. It is rare for people with a Healthy Heart to get endocarditis. It can be deadly if not detected early and treated properly. Endocarditis happens when certain bacteria from another part of your body get into the bloodstream. People with damaged heart valves, artificial heart valves, or other heart problems are most at risk for endocarditis, which can cause congestive heart failure and stroke. Antibiotics and, in severe cases, surgery, are used to treat Endocarditis.  

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ENDOCARDITIS?  

Symptoms of Endocarditis incluse: 

• Coughing
• Blood or red colored urine
• Confusion
• Headache
• Skin bumps, skin rashes
• Red spots inside lower eyelid
• Pain, discomfort, Body aches
• Fever
• Unexplained Weight loss 
• Red or black spots on fingernails

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT 

Diagnosis: Review of symptoms and medical history and a physical examination. Blood culture to identify the bacteria that caused the infection. An echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart), electrocardiogram (ECG), or chest X-ray may also be done for complete diagnosis.

Treatment: Treatment for endocarditis may include: 

1. IV antibiotics 
2. Surgery to repair or replace heart valve

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

1. People with endocarditis, have a higher risk for developing it again. Take precautions such as proper oral care and preventive health check-ups.
2. Consult a Doctor immediately, if you have had Endocarditis before and upon presentment of any of it’s symptoms
