Hiatal Hernia

What is Hiatal Hernia
A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach bulges up through the diaphragm into the chest. Weak muscles or a larger-than-normal opening through the diaphragm may lead to hiatal hernia. Obesity, injury to the area, or pressure on the stomach from pregnancy, coughing, or straining to have bowel movements may weaken muscles and put pressure on the stomach. Hiatal hernia often has no symptoms. However, stomach acid can back up into the esophagus causing heartburn, nausea, and chest pain. Many people with hiatal hernia also have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), although you can have one condition without having the other. Having GERD over many years can increase the risk for cancer of the esophagus and other problems.
Symptoms of Hiatal Hernia are-
Heartburn,Belching,Taste of acid in mouth,Sore throat,Pain or discomfort,Pressure or heaviness,Shortness of breath

When to See Your Doctor
See your doctor if you have new symptoms, or if your symptoms don't get better or get worse even after self-care. If you have chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, tarry or dark stools, vomit blood, feel faint, or have difficulty swallowing or having a bowel movement, seek immediate medical care.
Diagnosed By
Your doctor can diagnose hiatal hernia by taking your medical history and doing a physical exam. Other tests may include blood tests, X-rays or endoscopy, a lighted scope used to view your stomach.
