COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is a chronic lung disease that makes breathing difficult. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the two conditions that make up COPD. People with COPD may have one or both conditions. Smoking is the most common cause of COPD. It often takes many years to develop. People who have emphysema often have shortness of breath, a chronic cough, wheezing, and chest tightness.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Diagnosis: Medical history review and physical examination by a Doctor. Additional  blood tests, a lung function test, chest X-ray, or CT scan may be required to diagnose COPD.

Treatment: COPD treatment requires patient to quit smoking, if he or she is a smoker. Treatment options may include:

  1. Medications to open airways
  2. Oxygen
  3. Pulmonary rehabilitation
  4. Surgery
