WHAT IS FOOD POISONING?

Food poisoning happens when we eat food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, or parasites. This usually happens when food is improperly handled,cooked or stored. The symptoms in most cases begin within two to six hours after eating the food, but it can be longer or shorter depending on the type of food poisoning. Most types of food poisoning are treatable at home.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF FOOD POISONING? 

The most common symptoms of food poisoning include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and weakness. 

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

Diagnosis: Diagnosis of food poisoning is done by a review of medical history and conducting a physical examination. Additional diagnostic tests such as blood or stool investigations may be needed.. In case of severe symptoms, other tests may be required  to check for more serious problems.

Treatment: The most important treatment for most cases of food poisoning is rest and fluids. Your doctor may suggest taking a medicine to help stop or slow diarrhea. In some cases, antibiotics or other medications may be needed depending on the type of infection. If food poisoning results in dehydration, IV fluids may be needed to be administered in a hospital or clinic. 

Most cases of food poisoning can be treated at home by following these tips: 

  1. Getting rest

  2. Small sips of water or other liquids, avoiding milk, coffee

  3. Avoiding solid foods till stomach has settled

  4. Starting with bland foods such as curd and rice, fruits etc 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  1. Consult a Doctor in case symptoms of food poisoning are combined with blood in stools, uncontrolled diarrhea lasting more than 2 days, high fever and symptoms of lightheadedness, dizziness and dehydration. 

  2. Get emergency medical care in case of Bleeding or black or maroon stools, pounding or racing heart, food poisoning caused by mushroom, botulism or fish as these may be life threatening if not treated promptly.
