WHAT IS BINGE EATING DISORDER?
Binge-eating disorder is a serious eating disorder.For some people, excessive overeating goes out of control and becomes a regular occurrence. This may be embarrassing but the compulsion is so strong that they can't resist.
Some causes of binge eating are:
Genetics, biological factors, long-term dieting and psychological disorders can increase the risk.
Binge-eating disorder is more common in women than in men. Most often it begins in the late teens or early 20’s.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF BINGE EATING DISORDER?
Most people with binge-eating disorder are overweight or obese. And you could be at a normal weight too. Following are few behavioral and emotional signs and symptoms of this disorder:
eating unusually large amounts of food in a specific amount of time
knowing that your eating pattern is an issue
eating even when not hungry
rapidly gorging during binge episodes
continue eating until you're uncomfortable
eating alone or in secret often
depression and disgusted, guilty or upset feeling about your over eating
frequently dieting, with no evident weight loss
The condition’s severity is determined by the number of episodes of bingeing that occur during a week.
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Diagnosis: For the purpose of diagnosis, a psychological evaluation may be required, along with discussion on eating habits. Some tests such as Blood and urine tests, sleep lab consultation may be recommended
Treatment of binge-eating disorder aims at reducing eating binges and achieving healthy eating habits. Because binge eating could be bundled up with shame, poor self-image and other negative emotions, treatment may also address these and any other mental health issues related , such as depression.
The treatment would typicall include:
Psychotherapy: To help teach how to exchange unhealthy habits for healthy ones and control bingeing episodes.
Medications: As prescribed by the Doctor that may help reduce symptoms.
Behavioral weight-loss programs: An appropriate, weight-loss programs generally done under strict medical supervision ensures results, especially the ones that address binge triggers.
