WHAT IS LIVER CIRRHOSIS
Chronic scarring of the liver due to alcoholism and Hepatitis C virus infection causes it to deteriorate and stop functioning normally. This condition is known as Liver Cirrhosis. The scar tissue blocks the flow of blood through the liver, making it unable to remove toxins and bacteria from the body. The damage also interferes with the liver's ability to process nutrients, hormones, and some medications. Damage to the liver can also lead to high blood pressure. Liver Cirrhosis is not curable.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF LIVER CIRRHOSIS
Symptoms of liver cirrhosis include decrease in appetite, blood in vomit, yellow skin and eyes, erectile dysfunction, swollen or bulging veins, redness of skin
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Diagnosis: A physical examination by a Doctor followed by a review of the medical history. Diagnostic tests such as blood test to check liver function, CT Scan, ultrasound and a liver biopsy may be needed.
Treatment: The purpose of the treatment is to prevent the progression of the scar tissue and manage the complications arising from the disease. Treatment steps usually include:
If alcohol is the cause of cirrhosis, the most important step is to stop drinking.
Avoid medications that can harm the liver
Some people may need to be hospitalised to manage complications
Liver transplant is the only possible cure for advanced stage liver cirrhosis
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Liver Cirrhosis cannot be cured, but steps can be taken to prevent further damage.
Progression of Liver Cirrhosis can be slowed down by cutting down on alcohol, avoiding medication that cause damage to the liver in consultation with a Doctor.
Getting vaccinated for Hepatitis A and B
Avoiding foods that can potentially be harmful to people with Liver Cirrhosis
