WHAT IS CONSTIPATION?  

Constipation is a common condition in which people are unable to regular bowel movements, usually less than 3-4 times per week. It may also result in having dry and hard stools that are difficult to pass. Constipation usually is nothing much to worry about and can be because of changes in food, medication or other lifestyle factors. However, prolonged or regular constipation can lead to hemorrhoids. 

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CONSTIPATION? 

Decrease in appetite, swelling, constipation, nausea or vomiting, increased passing gas, pressure or fullness, foul taste in the mouth, bad breath, headache, general pain and discomfort, painful bowel movements, Distended stomach, coated or furry tongue, Straining with passing stool. 

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: 

Diagnosis: Review of medical history and physical examination by a Doctor. For chronic constipation, the doctor may suggest do a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy or other tests as may be required. 

Treatment: Most cases of constipation can be treated with lifestyle changes. In some cases, the doctor may recommend using laxatives for a short time.

Home Care: Some tips to help prevent constipation: 

  1. Eating a fiber-rich diet

  2. Regular exercise

  3. Drinking plenty of fluids

  4. Taking fiber supplements
