Gastroenteritis

WHAT IS GASTROENTERITIS?

Gastroenteritis is irritation of the stomach and intestines. Viruses, bacteria, parasites, or food-borne illness can cause Gastroenteritis. The illness usually spreads from contact with a sick person. Eating or drinking contaminated food or beverages also will spread the illness. Most people recover in a few days by drinking plenty of fluids and resting. Antibiotics treat gastroenteritis caused by bacteria or parasites.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF GASTROENTERITIS?

The symptoms of Gastroenteritis include: abdominal pain and cramping, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.  Decreased appetite, bloating or fullness, fever, frequent loose motions, change in stools, foul smelling stools, generally upset stomach

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Diagnosis: Gastroenteritis can be diagnosed by a Doctor after reviewing patient’s condition and symptoms, medical history and physical examination. Other tests such as blood or stool investigations may be required to check for bacterial infection.

Treatment: Gastroenteritis usually goes on it’s own in 3-5 days time. The treatment for gastroenteritis may include:

  1.  Drinking lots of clear fluids to replace the electrolytes lost from vomiting and diarrhea. ORS, coconut water or salt and water help

  2. Antibiotics for bacterial infections, anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medications, if recommended by doctor

  3.  Acetaminophen as needed to ease muscle aches and lower fever. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, which can irritate the stomach.

  4. Avoiding solid foods till nausea and vomiting stops and getting plenty of rest

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  1. Consult a Doctor if symptoms get worse or dont get better in 2 days

  2. Get Emergency help in case of severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool.

  3. Infants and older people, and people with chronic illnesses are at higher risk for dehydration from gastroenteritis.
