What is Goiter

A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland. It causes a lump in the throat below the Adam's apple. Lots of things cause goiters -- thyroid hormone levels that are too high or too low, dietary problems, genetics, drug side effects, and different health conditions. Women and people over age 40 are more likely to develop goiters. Goiters are common and rarely a sign of a serious underlying problem. Treatments depend on the cause.

Symptoms of Goiter are

Shortness of breath, Cough, Difficulty swallowing, Swelling, Hoarse voice

Treatment

Treatment for a goiter depends on the cause. Treatments include: 

  1. Watching and waiting 

  2. Radioactive iodine, which will shrink the thyroid to lower hormone levels 

  3. Thyroid supplements, to raise hormone levels Iodine solutions 

  4. Surgery to remove the thyroid
