A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland. It causes a lump in the throat below the Adam's apple. Lots of things cause goiters -- thyroid hormone levels that are too high or too low, dietary problems, genetics, drug side effects, and different health conditions. Women and people over age 40 are more likely to develop goiters. Goiters are common and rarely a sign of a serious underlying problem. Treatments depend on the cause.
