What is Middle Ear Infection
A middle ear infection is the most common type of childhood bacterial infection, but it can also affect adults. These ear infections are often triggered by allergies, colds, and sinus infections. When the tubes leading from the middle ear to the back of the throat become swollen and blocked, bacteria or viruses can grow. This causes fluid buildup, which puts pressure on the eardrum, causing pain and, sometimes, hearing loss.

Treatment
Treatment for a middle ear infection may include:
1.Antibiotics
2.Drinking plenty of fluids
3.Decongestants
4.Allergy treatments
5.Ear tube surgery for chronic ear infections
Self Care
1.Apply a warm water bottle or cloth to the ear
2.Use OTC ear drops for pain
3.Take OTC pain relievers (do not give aspirin to children)
4.Decongestants
When to See Your Doctor
Any child aged 6 months or younger with a fever and symptoms of an ear infection should see a doctor. Children older than 6 months should see a doctor if symptoms don't improve in a day or two, or if they have severe ear pain or a high fever.
Diagnosed By
The doctor will diagnose a middle ear infection by taking a medical history and doing a physical exam, including an ear exam. The doctor may also order hearing tests, and tests to better view the eardrum.
