WHAT IS TYPHOID FEVER?
Typhoid fever is a life-threatening illness caused by Salmonella bacteria. Fever, body pain, headache, weakness and lack of appetite are common symptoms. Until typhoid fever is treated, it is highly contagious. It can be contracted by contaminated food or water or close contact with someone who has it. Poor hygiene and sanitation is one of the common causes of Typhoid. Antibiotics can treat typhoid however, some people can become carriers and need further treatment. A vaccine can also help prevent typhoid fever.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF TYPHOID FEVER?
Some common symptoms of Typhoid are diarrhea, Joint pain, decreased appetite, fever, disorientation, general discomfort, confusion, tiredness and headache
DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT
Diagnosis: Doctor examination, review of symptoms and medical history followed by blood or stool culture.
Treatment: Treatment of typhoid fever may include:
Antibiotics
Fluids to prevent dehydration from diarrhea or fever
Corticosteroids in severe cases, to treat symptoms such as seizures or shock
Emergency surgery for perforated intestine
Gallbladder surgery if antibiotics aren't effective in eliminating the bacteria in carriers
Prevention
Typhoid can be avoided by the following means:
Practicing proper hygiene and sanitation
Avoiding contaminated water, ice cream etc
Eating well cooked food while still hot.
Cleaning and peeling raw fruits and vegetables
Avoiding street food.
