Viral Gastroenteritis

WHAT IS VIRAL GASTROENTERITIS

Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the stomach and intestines caused by viruses. Gastroenteritis symptoms include abdominal pain and cramping, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Although it's sometimes called the "stomach flu," the flu virus does not cause gastroenteritis. The illness usually spreads easily from contact with a sick person. Eating or drinking contaminated food or beverages will also spread the illness. Most people recover in a few days by drinking plenty of fluids and resting. Infants, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses are at higher risk for dehydration from gastroenteritis.

SYMPTOMS OF VIRAL GASTROENTERITIS

Diarrhea,Fever,Upset stomach,Pain or discomfort,Nausea or vomiting

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Diagnosis: Gastroenteritis can be diagnosed by the Doctor by a physical examination, review of medical history. If required the Doctor may ask for getting a stool test done.  .

Treatment: Treatment for gastroenteritis may include:

1.Drinking clear fluids. To replace the electrolytes lost from vomiting and diarrhea, try an electrolyte drink. Or add a pinch of salt to a glass of water.

2.Anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medications, if recommended by your doctor

3.Taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed to ease muscle aches and lower fever. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications, which can irritate the stomach.

4.IV fluids if severely dehydrated

Self Care

Self-care for gastroenteritis includes:

1.Drinking clear fluids, such as electrolyte drinks, broths, teas, and water, for the first 24 hours

2.Avoiding solid foods until nausea and vomiting stop

3.Rest

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

If you can't keep fluids down, your symptoms get worse, or symptoms don't get better after a day or two, call your doctor. If an infant is vomiting or has diarrhea, watch for signs of dehydration, such as crying with no tears, a sunken fontanel (soft spot on the head), or a dry diaper after several hours. Call your doctor immediately. Get immediate medical attention if you have severe abdominal pain, vomit blood, or have black tarry stools.
