Chronic Sinusitis

WHAT IS CHRONIC SINUSITIS?

Sinusitis is a swelling of the sinuses that blocks the sinuses from draining normally. It is often caused by a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection. Sometimes sinusitis is caused by allergies or a blockage in the nose. Sinusitis can cause a stuffy nose, bad breath, cough, fatigue, fever, and headache. Sinusitis is termed as Chronic Sinusitis when symptoms last longer than 3 months.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CHRONIC SINUSITIS? 

The symptoms of sinusitis are as follows: 

  • Headache,
  • Swelling in the face
  • Cough
  • Decreased sense of taste and smell
  • Ear ache,
  • Post nasal drip or drainage
  • Pain 
  • Bad breath
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty in breathing through nose.

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT 

Diagnosis: Review of symptoms and medical history, physical examination including observing the  nasal passages. At times diagnostic tests like endoscopy, CT scans, or MRIs may be used to see the sinuses more clearly. In some cases, bacterial culture or do allergy testing of sinuses may be required. .

Treatment: One or more of the following treatments may be suggested:  

  1. Saline nasal sprays to keep nose moist
  2. Decongestants to help ease a stuffy nose
  3. Pain relievers 
  4. Corticosteroid nasal sprays to help treat swelling
  5. Antibiotics for sinusitis caused by a bacterial infection

If medications do not help, a surgery to drain the sinuses may be recommended.   

Some home care tips to manage sinusitis can be drinking extra fluids, using a humidifier in the room, saline nasal sprays, practicing Neti, taking a hot shower etc

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  1. Consult a Doctor if symptoms are not relieved within a week
  2. Seek emergency medical care in case of severe headache, shortness of breath or confusion.
