Fasting Blood Sugar Test

Fasting blood sugar is the blood sugar level measured after a person has fasted overnight. It rules out an abnormal blood sugar level and greatly benefits the people suffering from diabetes to monitor their blood sugar level.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A FASTING BLOOD SUGAR TEST ? 

No special preparation might be required except: 

  • patient  must not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight before the test
  • must not  smoke after midnight 
  • must take the ongoing medicines the morning of the test with small sips of water

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE TEST? 

  •  a blood sample is drawn with a needle from a patient's arm
  • sample sent to the path lab

After the Test

  • normal diet can be resumed till doctor advises any changes
  •  test results are sent to doctor 

Interpretations : 

70-110             Normal Glucose Tolerance

110-126 Impaired Glucose

>126             Provisional Diag. Diabetes Mellitus

Important Information

This is comparatively a very simple blood test. Basic complications such as infection at the puncture site, bleeding, or difficulty in finding the vein are the only possibilities.
