Adenoidectomy
Adenoidectomy is a common surgery to remove the adenoids which are the glands located in the roof of the mouth, behind the soft palate where the nose connects to the throat. They produce white blood cells that help fight infections. Typically, they shrink during adolescence and may disappear by adulthood.
Why the Adenoids are Removed?
Frequent throat infections tend to cause enlargement of adenoids. Enlarged adenoids can further obstruct breathing and block the Eustachian tubes, which connect the middle ear to the back of the nose. Clogged Eustachian tubes cause ear infections that can affect the child’s hearing and respiratory health.
Symptoms of Enlarged Adenoids
Frequent ear infections
Sore throat
Difficulty swallowing
Difficult nasal breathing
Habitual mouth breathing
Obstructive sleep apnea
A Paediatrician may recommend an adenoid removal if your child has chronic ear or throat infections that don’t respond to antibiotic treatments, and occuring more than 5-6 times per year and are impeding the child’s education due to frequent absences.
Preparing for an Adenoidectomy
Preoperative blood tests to help ensure that there won’t be excessive bleeding during and after the procedure.
Consult the Doctor before giving any medication one week before the surgery
Complete fasting, the night before surgery. This includes water. If Doctor has prescribed medication before surgery, give it with a very small sip of water.
After an Adenoidectomy
Sore throat for 2-3 weeks is expected after surgery which is perfectly normal. Drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration. Avoid spicy, hot or crunchy foods. Cold liquids and desserts help. An ice collar would help with pain and reduction of swelling. Avoid strenuous activity for up to one week after surgery and resume school in 3-5 days after the Surgeon’s approval.
Risks of an Adenoidectomy
Adenoid removal is usually a well-tolerated operation. Still, risks from any surgery include bleeding and infection at the surgery site. There are also risks associated with anaesthesia such as allergic reactions and breathing problems. Ensure to inform the doctor for known allergies to any medication.
